Straightening teeth with aligners is a commitment measured in months, so the practical questions are less about the technology and more about whether the routine fits your life. Shield Dental Care provides Invisalign clear aligners, along with traditional braces, at our office in Burke, about 7 minutes from West Springfield High School and roughly 16 minutes from the NGA campus outside rush hour. Springfield teens, parents and working adults come to us when they want orthodontic care from the same office that handles their checkups. This page covers how aligner treatment works day to day for a Springfield household. For our other services, see the Springfield family dentist overview.
How aligners move teeth
Each aligner is a clear plastic tray shaped slightly differently from the one before it. Wearing them in sequence moves the teeth a small step at a time. Treatment starts with digital scans or impressions, from which the full series is planned; at our office each aligner is typically worn for about two weeks before switching to the next. Our full guide to orthodontic treatment explains how Invisalign compares with braces and which bite problems each handles best.
The 22-hour question
Aligners only work while they are in your mouth. The American Association of Orthodontists says it is critical to wear them 20 to 22 hours a day, or as prescribed (AAO: Clear Aligner Therapy). That leaves two to four hours for meals, brushing and anything else, which is less than most people expect.
Think through where those hours go on a normal Springfield weekday:
- The commute. Coffee in the car on the Fairfax County Parkway or the Beltway means trays out. Drink it before you leave or switch to water on the road; only plain water is safe with aligners in.
- Lunch at work. Keep a case, a travel toothbrush and a small toothpaste in your bag or desk. Brushing before the trays go back in prevents food from being pressed against the teeth all afternoon.
- Grazing. Snacking through the afternoon is the habit that quietly erodes wear time. Group eating into set meals.
- Evenings out. A long dinner can take two hours by itself. On those days, keep the rest of the day tight.
If 20 hours a day sounds unrealistic for your routine, say so at the consultation. Braces, with clear or tooth-colored brackets, take compliance out of the equation, and they remain the more predictable choice for some complex bites. The article on choosing between braces and clear aligners lays out the trade-offs.
Check-ups and visit rhythm
During treatment you come in periodically so Dr. Pejman Ghorbani can confirm the teeth are tracking with the plan, check the fit, and hand over the next set of aligners. Visits are short. With the office open until 5 PM Monday to Thursday and until 2 PM on Friday and Saturday, aligner check-ups can often be booked around school and work hours. If you also see us for cleanings, ask the front desk whether a check-up and a cleaning can be booked back to back to save a trip.
Aligners for Springfield teens
Teens are among the most common aligner patients, and the main concern parents raise is whether a 15-year-old will actually wear them. Some do brilliantly; others do better with braces they cannot take out. A few points specific to student life:
- Aligners come out for meals in the school cafeteria, so the case has to come too. Lost trays cost time.
- Student athletes at West Springfield High and other local schools should ask how to protect their teeth during play. Football, lacrosse, field hockey and ice hockey all require a mouthguard under high-school rules; the sports mouthguard guide for Springfield high school athletes covers what works during orthodontic treatment.
- Marching band and wind instruments are usually manageable with aligners in, but there is an adjustment period.
When aligners are part of a larger plan
Straightening is sometimes a step toward other work rather than the end goal. Moving crowded front teeth into line before porcelain veneers for Springfield patients lets the veneers be thinner and remove less enamel. Uprighting a tilted tooth can make space for a replacement tooth beside it. And if you clench or grind, it is worth discussing a guard for after treatment; our teeth grinding and TMJ page for Springfield explains why. After the last aligner, a retainer keeps the result; teeth drift without one.
What the first consultation covers
The first visit checks whether your teeth and gums are ready for orthodontic movement and whether aligners suit your bite. Expect an exam, digital X-rays and a conversation about what bothers you about your smile, whether that is crowding, spacing or how the teeth meet. If a 3D cone beam scan would clarify root positions or jaw structure, it can be taken in the office. You leave knowing whether aligners or braces are the better fit, a rough length of treatment, and the cost.
Paying for aligners
Orthodontic coverage varies more than almost any other dental benefit. Some plans include it only for children, some include adult orthodontics with a separate lifetime maximum, and many exclude it. Federal employees choosing a FEDVIP dental plan during Open Season can compare orthodontic benefits plan by plan; what to look for is covered in our Springfield guide to FEDVIP and TRICARE dental coverage. Unlike whitening, braces are listed in IRS Publication 502 among dental treatments that count as medical expenses (IRS Publication 502), so a health FSA can usually be used for orthodontic treatment; confirm with your FSA administrator. The office reviews your benefits before treatment and offers in-house payment plans.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate orthodontist in Springfield, or is everything handled here?+
For the aligner and braces options offered at Shield Dental Care, the consultation, scans and progress check-ups take place at our Burke office, alongside your regular dental care. Dr. Ghorbani will tell you at the consultation if your bite needs an approach beyond what is offered here.
What happens if I lose an aligner on vacation?+
Call the office. Depending on where you are in the series, you may be told to move to the next aligner early or go back to the previous one while a replacement is arranged. Do not simply go without trays for days.
Can I start aligners if I have a cavity or gum inflammation?+
Those need to be treated first. Aligners cover the teeth for most of the day, so any active decay or gum problem should be under control before treatment begins, which is why a full exam comes before scans.
Is it worth timing aligner treatment around FEDVIP Open Season?+
It can be. If your current plan has no adult orthodontic benefit and you are a federal employee, comparing plans in the mid-November to mid-December window before starting may save money, provided waiting a couple of months is not a problem for your teeth.
Will aligners affect how I speak in meetings?+
Some people notice a slight lisp for the first few days with each new aligner. It usually fades quickly as the tongue adapts. Reading aloud at home for a few minutes helps.
