Cosmetic Dentistry
Veneers, whitening, bonding and smile makeovers, and what each one can and cannot do.
Written by the Shield Dental Care team, Burke VA
Cosmetic dentistry covers treatments that differ enormously in cost, permanence and how much of the tooth they remove. The most useful thing this page can do is help you work out which one your particular concern actually calls for — because whitening, bonding and veneers solve different problems, and the cheapest option is sometimes the right one.
Matching the treatment to the problem
Discolouration
If the shade of your teeth is the concern and their shape and position are fine, whitening is the answer and nothing more invasive is needed. In-office whitening typically costs $300 to $600 per session and works immediately. Custom take-home trays run roughly $200 to $400 and take one to two weeks. Drugstore strips cost $20 to $60 and lift the shade less, but they are a reasonable place to start.
Whitening works on natural enamel. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings, which is why whitening is normally done before any restoration that has to be colour-matched, not after.
Chips, small gaps and worn edges
Composite bonding is applied directly to the tooth in a single visit, with little or no drilling. It is the least expensive and least permanent option, and it is reversible in a way veneers are not. It stains over time and will need replacing eventually.
Shape, size and mild misalignment
Veneers are thin porcelain shells bonded to the front of the tooth. Porcelain veneers typically cost $1,000 to $2,500 per tooth; composite veneers, $800 to $1,500. They are the most versatile cosmetic treatment and also the most committing — preparing a tooth for a veneer removes enamel that does not grow back.
Veneers or orthodontics?
For mildly crooked or slightly gapped teeth, veneers can produce a straight-looking result in about two to three weeks across two appointments, where aligners would take six to eighteen months. That speed is genuinely appealing, and it is also the reason to think carefully: aligners move the teeth you have, while veneers change their surface permanently. For larger gaps or real crowding, orthodontics is the correct treatment and veneers are a shortcut that will not hold up.
Dr. Ghorbani uses digital smile design to plan veneer placement around your existing tooth positions, which is what keeps a veneered smile looking like yours rather than like a set.
Smile makeovers
A smile makeover is not a procedure; it is a plan that combines several. That is why quoted ranges are so wide — a whitening-and-bonding refresh and a full-arch reconstruction are both described by the same phrase. The number only becomes meaningful once someone has looked at your teeth and you have said what you want changed.
What to ask at a consultation
Two questions are worth asking of any cosmetic proposal: how much tooth structure does this remove, and what happens when it wears out. Every cosmetic treatment has a lifespan. Knowing what the replacement looks like — and whether the tooth underneath will still have options — is the difference between a decision and a purchase.
How long each treatment lasts
Longevity is where the cost comparison usually resolves itself, because the cheapest treatment per visit is rarely the cheapest per year.
- Whitening — results fade gradually, faster if you drink coffee, tea or red wine. Most patients top up periodically rather than repeat the full course.
- Bonding — the shortest-lived of the three. It picks up stain that whitening cannot remove, because composite does not bleach, and chips at the edges over time.
- Porcelain veneers — the longest-lasting, and the most expensive to replace when the time comes. Porcelain does not stain the way composite does.
When cosmetic treatment should wait
Cosmetic work goes on top of a healthy mouth, not instead of treating one. Active decay, untreated gum disease or an infection all need to be dealt with first — a veneer bonded to a tooth with decay underneath is an expensive way to hide a problem that is still progressing. Recession changes the picture too, because the gum line frames everything a veneer is trying to do.
Grinding is the other common reason to pause. Porcelain is strong but brittle, and a patient who clenches hard at night will break veneers. That does not rule the treatment out; it means a night guard is part of the plan rather than an afterthought.
The order things happen in
Sequence matters more in cosmetic dentistry than in most areas, and getting it wrong is expensive. Health first, then whitening, then any restoration that has to be colour-matched — because crowns, veneers and fillings are made to match the shade your teeth are on the day the impression is taken, and they will not lighten later. Deciding to whiten after new veneers are fitted is the most common and most costly version of this mistake.
