A Thin Shield That Blocks Cavities Before They Start
Dental sealants are one of the most effective — and most underused — preventive treatments in dentistry. A thin protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth, sealants physically block the bacteria and food particles that cause cavities from reaching the deep grooves where decay most commonly develops.
At Shield Dental Care in Burke, VA, we offer dental sealants for children and adults as part of our preventive dentistry program. The application is quick, painless, and provides years of protection.

What Are Dental Sealants?
Sealants are a clear or tooth-colored resin material that flows into the natural pits and fissures on the biting surfaces of your molars and premolars. Once applied, the sealant hardens to form a smooth, protective barrier over the tooth surface.
These grooves are the most cavity-prone areas in your mouth. Even with excellent brushing habits, toothbrush bristles often can’t reach the deepest parts of these fissures. Sealants solve that problem by sealing the grooves shut — giving bacteria nowhere to hide.
How Sealants Protect Your Teeth
The concept is simple but powerful:
- Bacteria can’t penetrate the barrier. The sealed surface prevents plaque from accumulating in grooves where it normally causes decay.
- Food particles can’t get trapped. Smooth, sealed surfaces are much easier to keep clean with normal brushing.
- Acid attacks are reduced. Without bacteria colonies in the grooves, there’s less acid production damaging your enamel.
According to the CDC, sealants can prevent up to 80% of cavities in back teeth — the area where most decay occurs. Combined with fluoride treatments, sealants provide a comprehensive protective strategy.
Are Sealants Just for Kids?Sealants are most commonly applied to children’s permanent molars as soon as they emerge — typically between ages 6 and 12. Protecting these teeth early means many children grow up cavity-free in their most vulnerable areas.
But sealants aren’t just for kids. Adults who are cavity-prone, have deep grooves in their teeth, or want extra protection can benefit too. If you have molars that haven’t developed decay and don’t already have fillings, sealants can still be applied to protect them.
Dr. Ghorbani evaluates each patient’s tooth anatomy and cavity risk to determine whether sealants are a good fit.

The Sealant Application Process
Applying sealants is one of the simplest procedures in dentistry:
- Clean: The tooth is thoroughly cleaned and dried.
- Prep: A mild etching solution is applied for a few seconds to help the sealant bond. The tooth is rinsed and dried again.
- Apply: The liquid sealant material is painted onto the grooves of the tooth.
- Cure: A special curing light hardens the sealant in about 30 seconds.
That’s it. The entire process takes just a few minutes per tooth, requires no drilling, no anesthesia, and no discomfort. Your child can eat and drink normally right after the appointment.

How Long Do Sealants Last?
Sealants typically last 5 to 10 years with normal use. During your regular dental exams, we check the condition of existing sealants and can reapply them if needed. Even partial sealant coverage provides more protection than no sealant at all.
Most dental insurance plans cover sealants for children, and many cover them for adults as well. Our front desk team will verify your specific coverage before treatment.
