Getting Botox from a dentist surprises some people, but it makes sense: dentists spend their days working with the muscles and nerves of the face and jaw. At Shield Dental Care, a Burke practice reached from Springfield by heading west on Old Keene Mill Road, Dr. Pejman Ghorbani uses it to soften expression lines and to calm jaw muscles that work too hard. This page answers what Springfield patients usually want to know before booking: what can be treated, whether it is allowed in Virginia, how many visits it involves, and what it will and will not do. For our other services for local families, see the Springfield, VA dentist overview.

Areas and products

Three brands are stocked: BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport and Daxxify. A unit of one is not the same as a unit of another, so doses and prices cannot be compared one-for-one. What patients come in for splits roughly in two:

  • Appearance: lines between the brows, across the forehead and at the corners of the eyes, wrinkles on the sides of the nose, the lips and the area around the mouth, a gummy smile, the chin, the jawline and vertical neck bands.
  • Function: a sore, tight jaw from clenching or grinding, where relaxing the masseter muscle lowers the load on teeth and joints.

Every area has a dedicated page explaining dose, risks and evidence; our complete guide to Botox at Shield Dental Care links to all of them.

Can a Virginia dentist do this?

Yes. Botulinum toxin for dental purposes has long been within a Virginia dentist's scope, and a 2023 change in state law extended that to cosmetic use for dentists who finish the Virginia Board of Dentistry's required training. The coursework includes facial anatomy, assessing patients, consent and handling complications. Asking about that training is reasonable wherever you are treated, whether at a dental office or a med spa.

What "off-label" means for you

FDA approval is granted area by area. BOTOX Cosmetic holds approvals for four: the frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines, crow's feet and platysma neck bands. Injecting any brand somewhere outside its approved list is off-label, which is lawful and widespread, and Dr. Ghorbani will flag it during your consent discussion whenever it applies.

Jaw treatment is the clearest case. Grinding, clenching and TMJ pain are not an approved indication for any of these products. Study results point in both directions; a 2024 pooled analysis of 14 randomized trials, for instance, could not show a clear benefit over the treatments it was compared with. That is why it is offered here only after simpler measures have been tried and symptoms remain. The evidence is laid out on our page about Botox for teeth grinding and clenching.

If grinding is the reason you are calling

Relaxed muscles still grind a little, so the teeth need their own protection, and that usually means a custom guard first. Start with night guards and TMJ care for Springfield patients, and see our comparison of Botox and a night guard for grinding to understand when adding injections is worth discussing.

How the visits work from Springfield

Because nothing about the appointment requires recovery time, it fits easily into a workday. Expect this rhythm:

  • Consultation. Your health history and current medicines are reviewed, the muscles are examined while you make expressions and while your face is relaxed, and together you settle on a realistic goal. Sometimes the honest answer is that another approach would suit you better.
  • Injections. Several quick, shallow pricks with a very fine needle; most areas are finished within minutes.
  • Review at about two weeks. That is roughly when the full effect has developed, so it is the right moment to judge the result.
  • Repeat sessions. BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport usually wear off after about three to four months; in Daxxify's trials, frown-line results often held for around six. Sessions need to be spaced at least three months apart.

Since the effect fades on a fairly predictable timetable, booking your next visit on the way out saves a phone call later. Weekday appointments run until 5 PM Monday to Thursday, and from West Springfield the drive is about seven minutes when traffic is light. On treatment day, keep your head upright for a few hours, keep your hands off the injected spots and skip strenuous workouts until the next day, so an evening gym session right after is a poor plan.

When to hold off

Treatment should be postponed during pregnancy or breastfeeding and avoided if you have reacted to any botulinum toxin before; anyone with a cow's milk protein allergy should not have Dysport. An infection or rash at the planned site, or a disorder affecting how nerves signal muscles (ALS, myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton syndrome are examples), is also a reason to choose something else. Mention blood thinners, any recent course of aminoglycoside antibiotics, and any toxin injections in the past four months, including ones given elsewhere.

A little bruising or a small raised spot where the needle went in is common and fades quickly. Much rarer, and serious, is the effect spreading beyond the treated muscle: the FDA boxed warning describes difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing that can appear hours to weeks later (BOTOX Cosmetic prescribing information, DailyMed). Any of those symptoms means calling 911 or heading straight to an emergency room.

Cost and paying for it

The fee depends on which areas, which product and how many units your muscles need, and you receive a quote at the consultation before any injection. Dental insurance does not pay for cosmetic use. Federal employees should also know that flexible spending accounts such as FSAFEDS follow IRS rules, which exclude cosmetic procedures (IRS Publication 502). For jaw-related treatment, plans differ a great deal, so share your plan details with the front desk and they can help you look into it. The Botox cost page breaks down the factors behind a quote.

Book a consultation

Whether it is the lines between your brows or a jaw that aches every morning, the first step is the same conversation. Phone (703) 250-5072 or use our online appointment request, and say which area you have in mind.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

I already get Botox at a med spa. Can I switch to a dentist?+

Yes. Bring the product name and, if you have it, the dose and date of your last session. That helps with planning, and it lets us keep the three-month minimum gap between treatments.

Can I combine a Botox visit with my checkup to save a trip?+

Ask the team when you book. Injected areas should be left alone for the rest of that day, so whether the two can share an appointment depends on the area and which happens first.

Will jaw Botox change how my face looks?+

Sometimes. A relaxed masseter becomes less bulky, and a few people notice a slightly narrower lower face, which returns to normal once treatment stops. Others book masseter treatment precisely for that slimming effect.

Is it worth driving from Springfield for Botox?+

That is your call. From most Springfield neighborhoods the office is a short drive, and the advantage of a dental setting is a provider who already examines your bite, jaw and teeth, which matters most if clenching is part of the picture.

What should I bring to the consultation?+

A list of your medicines and supplements, any allergies, and details of previous injectable treatments. Photos of how the area looked a few years ago can also help when we talk about realistic goals.
