The short answer: for frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet, Botox and Dysport usually last about three to four months, and Daxxify often lasts longer. Those are averages, though, and the reasons behind the range explain why one person books every three months and another every five.
Why it wears off at all
Botulinum toxin works at the point where a nerve meets a muscle. It disables a protein the nerve ending needs to release its chemical signal, so the muscle stops getting the message to contract as strongly. It does not destroy the nerve or the muscle.
Over the following weeks, the nerve recovers. In animal studies, the nerve ending first grows small new sprouts that carry the signal for a while. Later the original nerve ending takes over again and the extra sprouts are cleared away. Researchers still debate how much each step contributes, but the result is the same: the effect is temporary by design, and movement comes back gradually rather than all at once.
What the labels and trials say
For frown lines at the standard dose, the FDA labeling for BOTOX Cosmetic says the effect typically begins one to two days after injection, builds through the first week, and lasts approximately three to four months. Dysport reduced the severity of frown lines for up to four months in its trials. In Daxxify’s two frown-line trials, the median time until lines were no longer rated “none” or “mild” was about 24 weeks, or roughly six months.
Two cautions. These figures come from frown lines, so other areas can behave differently. And a trial average hides a wide spread: some people are at the short end, some at the long end, and with Daxxify, some people will not see the longer effect at all.
Why it lasts longer for some people
Dose. Studies that used more than the labeled dose for frown lines found the effect lasted longer, up to a point where extra units added little. Doses above the label are off-label, and a bigger dose can also mean a bigger chance of unwanted weakness nearby, so it is a trade-off rather than a free upgrade.
Muscle strength and size. Strong, bulky muscles generally need more product. Men have been found to need higher doses for frown lines than women, and in one randomized study comparing three products, the effect lasted longer in women than in men for all of them.
How much movement you keep. A light treatment that leaves plenty of expression is a reasonable choice, but movement will show again sooner than after a fuller dose.
The product. Daxxify was studied for longer-lasting results. Our comparison of Botox, Dysport and Daxxify covers the differences.
Does it last longer the more you have it?
You will hear this often, so it is worth being precise. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that with repeat treatment, the muscle may thin, which can lead to longer-lasting results. A 2022 review of the long-term research found some studies reporting changes that persisted well beyond the usual window. It also found that few studies followed patients beyond six months, that many were industry-funded, and that the evidence overall is very limited.
So it may happen for some people, but it is not something to count on. What the evidence does show clearly is that repeat treatment keeps working: in Dysport’s trials, results held up over as many as four repeat treatments. Rarely, the body makes antibodies that blunt the response. A review of the research found this uncommon with current products at the low doses used for facial lines.
When to rebook
No sooner than every three months. That is how the products are labeled, and the safety and effectiveness of treating more often have not been clinically evaluated. Beyond that, there is no need to book on a fixed calendar. Many people come back when they notice movement returning and the lines start to bother them, which may be at three months or later.
What Botox cannot do is make itself last longer if you top it up early. If you feel your results fade quickly, tell us. We can look at the dose, the area and the product rather than simply shortening the gap. Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Botox last on the forehead?+
Typically around three to four months, similar to frown lines, though it varies with the dose and the strength of your forehead muscle. Movement returns gradually rather than all at once.
Why did my Botox wear off quickly?+
Common reasons include a light dose, strong muscles and the area treated. Very rarely, the body makes antibodies that reduce the response. Tell us when you notice it wearing off, and we can review the dose or product.
Can I get Botox again after two months?+
We do not recommend it. The products are labeled for treatment no more often than every three months, and the safety and effectiveness of a shorter gap have not been clinically evaluated.
Does Daxxify really last six months?+
In its frown-line trials, the median time before lines returned beyond “mild” was about 24 weeks. That is an average: some people will see less, and some more.
Cavities develop gradually, not overnight. Bacteria in your mouth feed on sugars and starches, producing acids that pull minerals from your enamel. Saliva repairs some damage, but frequent acid attacks overwhelm it, and plaque lets bacteria attack the tooth directly. Left unchecked, decay progresses from the enamel into the dentin, pulp, and eventually an abscess. Good hygiene, diet, and regular dental visits keep cavities preventable.
