Your Complete Guide to Preparing for Sedation Dentistry

You’ve decided to try sedation dentistry—that’s a great step toward getting the care you need comfortably. Now the question is: what do you need to do before your appointment?

Preparation is straightforward, but it varies depending on which sedation type you’re receiving. Here’s your complete guide from Shield Dental Care in Burke, VA.

General Preparation (All Sedation Types)

Regardless of which sedation method you and Dr. Ghorbani have chosen, these steps apply to every patient:

Share your complete medical history. This includes all medications (prescription, over-the-counter, and supplements), allergies, and any current health conditions. Some medications interact with sedation drugs, and we need to know everything to keep you safe.

Ask every question you have. There’s no such thing as a silly question when it comes to sedation. If you’re unsure about anything—how you’ll feel, what you can eat, when the effects wear off—ask before your appointment so there are no surprises.

Wear comfortable clothing. Loose-fitting clothes with short sleeves (for blood pressure monitoring) make your visit more comfortable. Leave jewelry and watches at home.

Arrange your schedule. For oral and IV sedation, plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Don’t schedule meetings, errands, or childcare responsibilities you’d need to handle after your appointment.

Preparing for Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide has the simplest preparation:

  • Eat a light meal 2 hours before your appointment (an empty stomach increases nausea risk; a full stomach can cause discomfort)
  • Avoid heavy, greasy foods the morning of
  • No alcohol for 24 hours before
  • Breathe through your nose during the procedure for maximum effectiveness

That’s it. No fasting, no driver needed, no day off work required.

Preparing for Oral Sedation

Oral sedation requires more preparation:

  • Fast for 6–8 hours before your appointment (Dr. Ghorbani will specify the exact timeframe). Small sips of water are usually fine.
  • Take the medication as directed — typically 30–60 minutes before your appointment, or the night before plus the morning of (depending on the protocol)
  • Arrange a driver — you will NOT be able to drive yourself. Your companion should stay at the office or be available by phone
  • Wear a short-sleeved shirt for monitoring
  • No alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment
  • Skip caffeine the morning of (it can counteract sedation effects)

Important: The medication may take effect before you arrive. Have your driver ready and don’t take the pill until you’re prepared to head to the office.

Preparing for IV Sedation

IV sedation has the most thorough preparation requirements:

  • Fast for 6–8 hours (no food or drink, except small sips of water with medications)
  • Arrange a responsible driver — mandatory, no exceptions
  • Wear loose clothing with accessible sleeves (the IV line goes in your arm or hand)
  • No alcohol for 24 hours before
  • No smoking for 12 hours before (smoking affects how your body processes sedation)
  • Continue regular medications unless Dr. Ghorbani specifically instructs otherwise
  • Remove contact lenses, dentures, and jewelry before your appointment
  • Plan for full-day recovery — no driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions for 24 hours

What to Bring to Your Appointment

  • Photo ID (required for sedation patients)
  • Insurance card (if applicable)
  • List of current medications (if not already on file)
  • Your companion/driver (for oral and IV sedation)
  • Headphones (optional — music can enhance relaxation)
  • A blanket or comfort item (optional — we want you comfortable)

After Your Sedation Appointment

Nitrous oxide: You’ll feel normal within 10 minutes. Drive yourself home, go back to work, eat normally.

Oral sedation: Rest for the remainder of the day. Drink plenty of water. Eat soft foods if you had dental work done. Don’t sign legal documents or make important decisions until the following day.

IV sedation: Same as oral, with an emphasis on the full 24-hour recovery period. Have someone stay with you for the first few hours after you’re home.
